Five Ancient Mysteries I'd Love to See Solved
Some archaeological discoveries answer questions. Others leave us with mysteries that endure for centuries—or even millennia.
We can date them, measure them, photograph them, and sometimes reconstruct how they worked. Yet the most important question remains just beyond our reach: What did this mean to the people who made it? If history offered to surrender five of its secrets, these are the ones I would choose.
1. What Was Göbekli Tepe Really For?
Between about 9600 and 8200 B.C., communities in what is now southeastern Turkey raised monumental enclosures filled with enormous T-shaped limestone pillars, some carved with foxes, snakes, birds, and other wild animals. The people who built Göbekli Tepe lived during the profound transition from hunting and gathering to settled farming, yet they organized the labor and skill required to create some of humanity’s earliest monumental architecture. Archaeologists generally interpret the structures as communal buildings connected with gatherings and ritual, possibly funerary practices, but excavations have also revealed domestic structures that complicate the old image of an isolated “temple.” We still do not know exactly what happened there—or what shared belief could draw people together to build on such an astonishing scale.
A provocative alternative: Writer Graham Hancock has offered a far more controversial interpretation, arguing that Göbekli Tepe may preserve knowledge passed down by survivors of an advanced Ice Age civilization destroyed during the upheavals at the beginning of the Younger Dryas. He has suggested that carvings such as those on Pillar 43 could encode an astronomical memory—or warning—of a catastrophe. Archaeologists do not accept that conclusion: no physical evidence of Hancock’s proposed predecessor civilization or transfer of knowledge has been found, while the tools, quarries, and surrounding sites connect Göbekli Tepe to local Neolithic communities. Still, his investigation asks a genuinely thought-provoking question: how much of humanity’s story vanished before anyone could write it down?
2. What Does the Phaistos Disc Say?
The Phaistos Disc was discovered in 1908 in a Minoan palace on Crete, its two clay faces impressed with 241 signs arranged in a careful spiral. Some signs resemble people, birds, plants, tools, and ships, but the writing system is otherwise unique, leaving scholars without the larger body of text normally needed to test a decipherment. It may preserve a hymn or incantation, as the Heraklion Archaeological Museum suggests, but no proposed translation has won general acceptance. The message has survived for roughly 3,700 years in plain sight—and we still cannot read a word of it.

3. Who Built the Antikythera Mechanism?
Recovered from an ancient shipwreck in 1901, the Antikythera Mechanism was a hand-powered Greek astronomical calculator capable of modeling celestial cycles and predicting events such as eclipses. Modern X-ray imaging has revealed gears and inscriptions hidden inside its corroded fragments, allowing researchers to reconstruct much of its dazzling mechanical logic. But only about one-third of the original device survives, and we still cannot confidently name its maker, locate its workshop, or know whether it was a singular masterpiece or one example of a broader technological tradition. How did knowledge sophisticated enough to create it flourish—and then leave so little behind?
4. Who Wrote the Voynich Manuscript—and Why?
The Voynich Manuscript is an illustrated codex written in an unidentified script by an unknown author, probably produced in Europe in the fifteenth century. Its pages contain strange plants, astronomical diagrams, bathing figures, pharmaceutical imagery, and flowing lines of text that have resisted generations of linguists, historians, and cryptographers. Many people have announced solutions, but none has produced a translation that scholars can reliably verify; we cannot even say with certainty whether the text encodes a natural language, a constructed system, or something intended to imitate meaningful writing. Is the manuscript guarding real knowledge—or is its greatest secret that there was never a readable message at all?
5. Exactly How Was the Great Pyramid Built?
The Great Pyramid was constructed for the pharaoh Khufu at Giza around 4,500 years ago, and surviving evidence gives us important pieces of the story. The workers’ settlement reveals an organized, well-supported labor force, while the logbook of an official named Merer records crews transporting fine limestone by boat from Tura to Khufu’s pyramid project. What those discoveries do not provide is a complete building manual: researchers still debate the precise ramp systems, lifting methods, work sequence, and logistics used to raise the monument’s millions of stone blocks. Recent scans have even detected previously unknown voids inside the pyramid, reminders that we do not yet fully understand either its construction or its internal design.
The Questions That Keep History Alive
These mysteries endure not because archaeology has failed, but because the surviving evidence is incomplete. Every excavation, new imaging technique, and overlooked inscription may add another piece—and sometimes one small discovery transforms the entire picture.
Perhaps that is why these questions exert such a pull. They stand at the edge between what humanity remembers and what time has taken away.
